As the 2026 college football season approaches, Ohio State is gearing up for a fresh start after a disappointing 2025 campaign. The Buckeyes are determined to bounce back and reclaim their glory, with a focus on replacing the 12 starters who contributed to their 12-0 regular season record. The process of identifying and developing younger players, along with strategic recruiting and the transfer portal, is well underway. With just over 90 days until the opener against Ball State, Bucknuts takes a closer look at the offensive starters who will kick off the year, beginning with the quarterback position.
Quarterback
In a rare occurrence, Ryan Day has a returning starting quarterback for the third time since taking over as the Buckeyes' head coach. Julian Sayin, the only returning Heisman Trophy finalist, had a productive first season as a starter in 2025, completing 77% of his passes and throwing for 3,610 yards, 32 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. While there's always competition at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, Sayin's status as the QB1 is secure for now, with backup Tavien St. Clair not yet challenging for the starting job. Sayin's focus on improving his movement in the pocket and using his legs more could make him another star quarterback under Day.
Running Back
Bo Jackson, who was third or fourth on the depth chart heading into the 2025 season, proved his worth by becoming the starting running back by the fifth game. Despite missing spring practice due to a shoulder procedure, Jackson is now entrenched in the role. Classmate Isaiah West and Florida transfer Ja'Kobi Jackson will also contribute, while freshman Legend Bey could earn snaps as a gadget player. However, a healthy Bo Jackson is expected to receive the bulk of the rushing work.
Wide Receiver
X: Jeremiah Smith, the best wide receiver in college football since arriving at Ohio State, is the Buckeyes' top receiver once again. Through his first two seasons, Smith has caught 163 passes for 2,558 yards and 27 touchdowns, despite teams focusing their defenses on him. NFL teams are already excited about the chance to draft Smith in 2027, and he's expected to have another stellar season. Z: Devin McCuin, one of two incoming transfers, looked polished in the spring game and has experience playing against top-tier teams.
Tight End
Nate Roberts, who played as a makeshift fullback as a freshman, will play his natural position this season and is in line to start. The former four-star prospect is a solid blocker and has good hands, as evidenced by his high school statistics. While Roberts will start, expect Ohio State to play multiple tight ends again this season, with Bennett Christian, Mason Williams, and Hunter Welcing rotating in.
Offensive Line
Left tackle and right guard are the two biggest questions on the Scarlet and Gray's offensive line. Ian Moore, a natural fit at tackle, is trending toward starting after productive performances during spring practice. Luke Montgomery, who took over at left guard last season, is an obvious starter once again, while Carson Hinzman, who has improved each season, will start at center for the third time. Austin Siereveld's versatility has been important, and he's likely to play right guard at the next level. Phillip Daniels, who earned the right tackle spot in the offseason, will start at right guard, with the possibility of Siereveld moving to right tackle.
